Q: Why does my switching power supply flicker or fail to start when connected to certain devices (e.g., motors, LED strips)?
A:
Inrush Overload: Inductive loads like motors and compressors require very high starting current during startup (5-10 times the rated value). If this exceeds the power supply's overload protection threshold, it triggers protection and restart cycles, causing flickering or jerking.
Excessive Capacitive Load: Long LED strips act as large capacitors. Their initial charging current upon connection may trigger the power supply's overcurrent protection.
Solution: Select a power supply with sufficient power headroom (recommended 2-3 times the rated power) or choose specialized power supplies designed for driving such loads.
